Pridham's Auctions and Appraisals is pleased to offer the important and extensive art collection of Joseph Liverant (1894-1981). This collection will include over 120 original works, lithographic posters and related material by Marc Chagall (1887-1985). Most examples are signed and or signed and dedicated to Mr. Liverant. Along with the Chagall collection are original works by Pablo Picasso, James Ensor plus Venetian Glass from the Macdonald Stewart Foundation along with other fine inclusions. Mr. Liverant, an Ex-Pat of Polish Jewish origin, fled Germany to take residence in Canada during the Second World War. Marc Chagall was an Ex-Pat of Russian Jewish origin, fleeing France and the Holocaust to take refuge in New York City during the war years. In the years following his return to France, Chagall took up residence at his famed home in St-Paul-de-Vence while Liverant purchased a residence in Beaulieu- sur-Mer. Social circles, shared interests, a common Jewish background including speaking Yiddish along with a proximity in age, transpired into a long, congenial relationship. This warm relationship is evident in the numerous dedications made on the lithographs and books that are in this Collection. After Liverant's death, the Collection was passed onto his wife Marguerite, and subsequently to his stepson, Mr. Félix Quinet. Mr. Quinet took great pride in his mother and stepfather's Collection, donating many pieces to the National Gallery of Canada. Upon Mr. Quinet's recent passing, the family has decided to divest the collection through public auction.
Color is all. When color is right, form is right. Color is everything, color is vibration like music; everything is vibration.
- Marc Chagall
